Capsaicin gel Options

Hi, I´d be grateful to hear if anyone has tried using Capsaicin gel to relieve the symptoms of RA. My mum has RA but cannot tolerate the drugs that have been prescribed for her, so I´m looking for anything else that might help. I read some research recently which indicated that Capsaicin gel helps with osteoarthritis so I´m wondering if it might also be effective with RA ?

Hi Tim,

Kings College Hospital were doing some research into the positive effects of Capsaicin in RA, there was this article on the BBC News site back in 2006.

I love spicy foods, and I do believe that they have a positive effect on my RA. Some people can't cope with the burn from the chillies and I believe they were trying to get the positive effects without the burning sensation.

Hope your mum manages to get some relief, it's certainly worth exploring.

Hi Tim

I've got Capsaicin. It works quite well, although I have nerve pain as well so it's difficult to tell which pain it is helping. It does smell quite strong but I've been quite impressed so I would definitely get her to try it.

My GP was happy to prescribe it. They can prescribe a stronger version I think. If she gets free prescriptions it'll work out cheaper.

Hope that helps - and she gets some relief from the pain.

Hi Tim,

My sister was prescribed Capsicain gel for nerve pain in her wrists and it worked very well. She has also recently tried Biofreeze on her knee (Osteoarthritis) and said that worked really well too.
Hope you can help your Mum get some relief from the pain.

Thanks so much for the helpful replies. Certainly sounds like this capsaicin gel is worth a try. My mum is a pensioner so hopefully she´ll be able to get it on prescription.

I was prescribed this for nerve pain following Shingles. I found it good for that but no relief for other pain caused by R.A. Anne
